Project Proposal

Title: Cold War: Clash of Ideologies

Abstract: My project is an educational game simulation. The player takes on the role of the United States during the Cold War. Through a series of turns and key decisions the player must decide the correct course of action. The game is also influenced by other Non-playable factions: USSR, China, Western Europe. The game is turn based and features a series of goals and objectives throughout. The game would include consequences based on decisions and measure the world influence based on the decisions and actions of the player. This combination of branching stories will allow a rich player experience as well as beneficial one. Players will be able to consult historians from either side to guide them in their decision making. Key Vocabulary will be used throughout the simulation in order to give meaning to key ideas and concepts associated with the Cold War. Players will be guided to follow the “historical history” but will also be able to determine their own outcome to the Cold War. Success will be determined based on overall power and influence based on decisions. Players will also been given a score to compare to other players.
Grade Level/Audience: The primary audience is students studying the Cold War in High School. I am hoping the game is interesting enough for a wider audience to play, but my primary objective is create an educational simulation for Social Studies students to enjoy and learn from.

Implementation/Design: The game will be developed in Flash ActionScript 3.0. I will be using a mouse based interface. In addition the game will be integrated as part of a Cold War website that I designed.
